About Us

The School (SSD) Established in 1993 at Kalady, the birth place of Jagadguru Adi Sankara, on the banks of the holy river Periyar, the school is committed to the promotion of classical arts. The school was promoted jointly by Prof. P.V.Peethambaran, an art lover and social worker and Mrs. Sudha Peethambaran, Mohiniyattam Artiste & DDK & ICCR Artiste.

SSD has 18 training centres and around 1000 students. It has grown into one of largest traditional classical schools in India. The traditional Natyamandapam of the schoolis at Kalady ( the main centre of the school). With a humble beginning at the Nehru Arts Society, Kalady with 20 students rose to around 1000highlighting the role played by SSD ant its promoters in motivating the students of classical arts.

The Sree Sankara Dance & Music festival commenced from 2003 was elevated to the International Sree Sankara Dance & Music Festival in 2017.

Activities


Imparts training in Mohiniyattam, Bharathanatyam, Kuchupudy and Classical Music.
Promotes short GURUKULAM TRAINING, an extended version of the "GURUKULAM"
mode of training which was in vogue during the ancient days.
Offers Teachers Training Programme to build up committed teachers in classical dance.
Encourages the publishing of useful books for the beginners of classical dance and music.
Propagates the great art forms of India by organizing stage programmes.
Organises the NATIONAL SREE SANKARA DANCE AND MUSIC FESTIVAL( Now redesignated as INTERNATIONAL SREE SANKARA DANCE & MUSIC FESTIVAL (ISSDMF)) to perpetuate the teachings and messages of Jagadguru Adi Sankaracharya who was instrumental in promoting the unity and integrity amongst people of all cultural sectors.
Works on choreographic innovations in dance programmes on contemporary themes.
Identifies and accredits rising professionals artistes.
Interacts with sabhas, councils, academies and organisations to promote inter-institutional understanding.
Arranges workshops, seminars, lecture demonstration, appreciation classes on classical dance and music.
Institutes awards to artistes who dedicate themselves to the cause of classical arts.
Honours senior gurus and professionals in the field of classical dance and music.
Generates interest in classical arts among the rural people by organising training centres of SSD.
Encourages budding artistes and junior students by organising solo programmes and group performances.
Makes representation to the governmental and professional bodies for a healthy growth of classical arts.
Disseminates information relating to classical arts by developing proper documentation.

Office Setup

The General Administration of the School is under the supervision of Prof. P.V.Peethambaran, the Promoter & Chief Co-ordinator of the School.

The Promoter is assisted by a P.R.O. and the student care section and office staff. Daily meetings are conducted to review the office set up. 20 Teaching Assistants and the office staff in a co-ordinated manner to provide the best service to the students and the stake holders.

The Acadamic activities are supervised by Smt. Sudha Peethambaran ,Dooradarsan & ICCR Artiste.
